Pasadena Daydream Festival 2019

My First Time

Originally I was planning to go to Austin City Limits in Texas because the line up seems amazing. Not only that, its just honestly not that expensive for a 3 day festival. The tickets range around $275 and has a ton of big name artists like The Cure, GunsNRoses, Cardi B, Meg The Stallion, and more! So, I was heavily debating on whether I wanted to go that. During this ‘should I spend the money’ thinking time, I saw that The Cure was also playing in Pasadena, California but in August rather than October when Austin City Limits is happening… Hmm

The Pasadena Daydream Festival was only 1 day, priced at $170 and only had 3 bands I really wanted to see. Instead of blowing over $1,000 just to go to a 3 day fest in another state, I opted for the Daydream Festival. I mainly just wanted to see The Cure for the first time ever in my life! Let me just say, I definitely got my money’s worth though because The Cure played a 2.5 hour set. They didn’t slow down once and neither did my dancing, singing, or tears. Lol!

Festival Lover

When it comes to attending a festival my inner child comes out and, I’m able to easily allow myself to have a good time. Going to festivals and seeing bands perform live is one of my favorite things to do because of how intimate and eclectic the experience is each time. You get to be surrounded by people who are into the same weird stuff as you, make friends, drink outside, and most importantly just live!

It’s also extremely fun for those who love festival fashion. For some fashion/style is not important but being the Leo sun I am, I have to express myself outwardly or I’ll feel caged. Style is something I’m aware of is a privilege and I’m very lucky to be able to live the life I do. I don’t ever want to seem like I’m shoving materialism down your throats.. it’s just something I genuinely enjoy when it comes to self expression. No judgement if it’s not your cup of tea! For this particular festival, I opted for platforms although the venue was held on a grassy knoll. It wasn’t extremely comfortable and I did fall at least once. NO REGRETS THO!!!!

Daydreaming in Pasadena

Overall I’d say the festival was a pleasant experience. It was extremely chill in the sense people could bring lawn chairs, their kids, and blankets to lay on while listening to music. I kept saying to Angela how cool it would be as a kid to say you were like 8 years old at a Cure concert.

Robert Smith seems to be extremely passionate about his work even after 40 years! It was as if I was seeing them in their 20’s and everything was brand new. The Cure’s music is something that’s deeply resonated with me for the small amount of time I’ve been on this earth. My heart feels more full hearing and seeing them play live. This was such a monumental concert for me because I have a feeling I won’t get to see The Cure ever play again due to their residency in England and their age. At the very least, The Cure has been marked off my list of bands to see before I die! I’ll always remember this festival as something extremely special in my heart.

10 Must Know Tips for Levitation Fest

A Levitation Festival Guide

Spring is thriving and we’re officially knee deep in festival season. I recently went to Levitation Fest 2018  and it was beyond words amazing! Since it was my first time going, I didn’t know what to expect or what to be prepared for. Now that I’ve gone and had the full experience, I can help show you the ropes. There are a  things I learned that you might want to know before going.

Levitation has changed over the past few years from being an outdoor event called Pysch Fest to a multiple location venue event in downtown Austin, Texas.  Most of the shows are conveniently held at bars within walking distance of one another which makes it easy to find most performances.
My friends and I stayed in Austin from Thursday to Sunday in an AirBnb about 20 minutes away. We were able to watch 3 shows packed with 5 bands or more each night for under $50 per ticket. Drinks were relatively cheap in comparison to my usual LA bar scene and there were many vegan food options around! Some of the events are 18+ and others 21+ depending on the location. We had a wild time dancin’ and singin’ along all weekend and will definitely be attending the festival next year!

Here’s a list of tips & tricks to consider before attending Levitation Fest:

1.Pick a hotel or airbnb near venues.

To avoid having to uber or drive back and fourth during the festival, choosing a hotel or airbnb downtown within walking distance would be the most convenient option. #learnedalesson

2.Find a good parking spot ahead of time.

There’s NO designated parking area for Levitation Fest in downtown Austin. If driving you’ll need to make arrangements to pay for a meter, parking lot, or parking garage ahead of time.

3.Screenshot mobile tickets prior to attending a show.

You might not have service at the venue and this is a solid guarantee you’ll have the tickets upon arrival.

4. Arrive early to shows!

Get there before doors open because you’ll have to wait in line for who knows how long if you decide to arrive on time. You may end up missing one of your favorite bands. It’s better to be early than late!

5.Download the find my iPhone app.

If you’re an iPhone user, make sure to have everyone in your group download the ‘Find my iPhone app’ just in case your phone is lost or stolen. Android users and others I don’t know how to help you. Lol!

6.Eat ahead of time.

Not all venues carry food but food trucks and restaurants are near most venues. I suggest eating before  because there is no gauruntee there’s food available, especially if you’re vegan. 😉

7.Bring a backpack or bag with enough space.

If you’re thinking about buying merch, make sure to bring a backpack with enough space. The backpack will help avoid having to hold merchandise during the event.

8.Come prepared knowing the bathroom situation.

Be prepared at some shows to use port-o-pottys. There isn’t always a place to wash hands or look in a mirror. Bring wet wipes, hand sanitizer, or whatever your preference is for sanitation!

9.Don’t bring blankets or chairs.

Most of the shows are held in bars, so no blankets or things to sit on is required. However, consider bringing a jacket. Spring season in Austin at night can get pretty cool around the low 60’s.

10.Wear boots or comfortable sneakers.

Some venues had rocks and dirt rather than regular concrete flooring. Walking around in heels or platforms shoes may not be the most comfortable at certain venues. I reccomend to Yelp or Google the venue before deciding on what type of shoe to wear. (I wore platforms and it was not logical, but I felt cute! I don’t recommend this at all. Lol!)
Hopefully some of these tips help before attending Levitation Festival!

Skin & Earth Comic by Lights

Skin & Earth

What girl do you know that reads comics? If you happen to know one, she’s probably a badass! In this digital era, it’s not so common to read comic books. On top of the unique interest, being a girl who reads comics has always been rare.  Lights, one of my favorite musicians, has inspired many girls over the past decade to take up the interest of comics throughout her career. The singer has always expressed an influence in comics through her album artwork, music videos, and interviews. With Lights debuting her 4th studio album Skin & Earth, she’s blessed us all by creating a comic that correlates with her music. I personally have never known a musician who created a concept album involving a comic book series. Lights is paving a new way of music expression and also inspiring more girls to read comics! This concept album was incredibly different and Lights fans were thrilled for this new medium of her art.

Lights Unlocked

The reason I’m sharing this on my blog is because I’ve finally finished the comic book series and it was amazing! This comic book series gave a new perspective to Lights’ personality and creativity. I’ve watched a few interviews of her talk about the album, the comic, and how its fictional. However, I can’t help but think some of the story is true and has been inspired by personal events in her life. For example, the main character is involved with another woman which came out of left field.

After the comic released Lights mentioned in an interview “If I met the right girl, I could easily fall in love”. Not that it’s a huge surprise that she’s openly bisexual, but she’s never personally shared that with fans. With every album she produces, its like we get to unlock little parts of her soul. It’s great to understand and connect with an artist that makes music you can easily associate with. This comic book made me personally feel as if I got to know her on a deeper level.

Music & Comics

Before I was able to get my hands on the comics, I listened to the music. The song “Giants” was released and I was skeptical about the new album. It was hard to associate with the song because I didn’t grasp an understanding behind the lyrics. The next song she released was “Skydiving” and my hope was quickly restored at least in the musical aspect of the album. Lights also gave hints to what the comics were about in music videos but I still had no idea of the meaning behind the songs. After reading the comic book series, everything made sense! My recommendation is to listen to the album and then read the comics. The story of the comic series is truly inspiring and has an amazing lesson overall.

I won’t spoil the story for you,

but I will mention some vague commentary

to look out for while reading!

Issue 1 – Priest looks very similar to someone close to Lights.. HMM..

Issue 2– My heart breaks at the end of this issue. 🙁

Issue 3– I was screaming all through out this issue. It’s my favorite of the series! I was shook!

Issue 4– Pay attention to the illustration & detail here!!!

Issue 5– My thoughts.. “What the fuck is about to happen???” I NEED ISSUE 6 RIGHT NOW!!!

Issue 6– Lengthiest of all issues, lots of dialogue, amazing illustrations.. everything makes sense. Closure.
